On the farm Nuweland Juan Louw started farming with Dormer Sheep in 1970 after he bought three Dorlou rams from Wilhelm Louw and cross bred them with Merino ewes. Since then they bought top quality rams from Rhenosterbosrug stud to use on their Dormer commercial ewes. After numerous success in slaughter lamb competitions Ewan Louw decided to start his own stud in 2005 and he bought two Rhenosterbosrug rams to mate with 85 Appendix A ewes from his commercial ewes.
In 2006 he used 200 Appendix A ewes from his own commercial ewes in the his stud and by 2011 he had 425 ewes in the stud ranging from Appendix A and B through to Stud Book Proper ewes.
The lambing season starts at the end of March with a lambing percentage of up to 170%. Lambs usually reach a marketing weigh of 45kg at a age of 120 - 150 days and a slaughter percentage of 52% - 54%. In 2007 Nuweland Dormers entered a lamb in the Malmesbury Slaughter Competition with a slaughterpercentage of 59%.
In 2011 Nuweland Dormers entered the National Auction in Bloemfontein for the first time and sold 11 ewes for an average of R9272 with a highest price of R13 000. We definitely plan to enter rams in in the National Auction in the near future and a first production auction is being planned as well.
